So far, I have only done the first round for the SDA. However, I do plan to do multiple rounds. I’ve modified the rules for the second round slightly- cutting/puncturing is now allowed. However, the sheet must still remain in its original dimensions.
I have a couple ideas about how I want to pursue this. Originally, I had wanted to combine all the canvases together to form a large canvas with each person’s art on the canvas. However, now I think I may want to do something more structural. I may cut the sheets into thin strips and arrange them with wire to form some sort of sculpture type thing. Earlier, I was thinking about centering it around Feb's heart. But after Bott's alterations to the piece, I may not anymore. I would like the end piece to be representative of something of each of the students participating, but also of my theme as well.
Depending on the results from the 2nd round, this may change, but so far the participants haven’t really done what I was expecting or what I thought they would do. I was imagining each thing each person adds to be very individual, but it seems like they are just adding small things to the previous person’s work. I feel like this may be because some of them might not want to destroy or cover up the previous person’s work. Some of the choices people have made have been interesting, and I may consider returning the canvas to the original person in the future to see how each original person views the changes that have been places upon their canvas.
I also want to somehow tell a story with each person’s art, and form some type of narrative or description based on the reports that each person turned in to me. Ideally, I want to be able to find some common theme between their descriptions, and if it happens to relate to my theme of identity, that would be the best.
A problem that I did have throughout the experience was communication- people have been forgetting due dates or asking for extensions even when I have clarified specific due dates. While this isn't too big of a problem since I would like for each person to produce the best work they can, it is kind of frustrating.
